Saudi utility giant Acwa Power said it consortium with US group Air Products has completed construction work on the mega green hydrogen project at Oxagon located within Saudi Arabia's mega futuristic city NEOM, and commercial operations are set to begin next year, reported Energy Intelligence, citing a senior official.
The $8.5 billion facility is now in the commissioning stage, stated Acwa CEO Samir Serhan recently while talking to analysts and investors during an earnings call.
The consortium, NEOM Green Hydrogen Company (NGHC), is a joint venture between Acwa Power, Air Products and NEOM, the developer of Saudi Arabia's mega futuristic city.
When fully operational, it will be the world's largest green hydrogen plant producing up to 600 tonnes of carbon-free hydrogen, converted into green ammonia for global export, providing a practical blueprint for green hydrogen at scale, according to NGHC.
In March this year, NGHC stated that its renewable power generation assets, including the wind garden, solar farm and transmission grid, had reached approximately 95% completion.
"The project remains on schedule, with up to 4 GW of combined solar and wind power generation targeted for completion by mid-2026, followed by commissioning of the electrolysers and first green ammonia product availability planned for 2027," it added in a statement.
