Activities

Shamal Az-Zour Al-Oula Power and Water Company, established in 2013, is Kuwait's premier independent power generation and water desalination company. It was established to develop, construct, and operate the Az-Zour North One Power and Water Plant. The company operates under the legal framework of Independent Water and Power Projects (IWPPs) and Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs). The Az-Zour North One Power and Water Plant is Kuwait's first privately-owned gas-fired combined cycle power and water desalination plant. It supplies around 10% of Kuwait's installed power generation capacity and approximately 20% of the country's installed water capacity. The plant operates under a 40-year long-term Energy Conversion and Water Purchase Agreement (ECWPA) with the Kuwait Ministry of Electricity and Water. The facility provides the cleanest and most efficient source of electricity in Kuwait. It plays a crucial role in meeting the country's anticipated peak demand of 25 gigawatts (GW) by 2025. Strict environmental procedures are followed for plant operation and maintenance. The plant utilizes gas and steam turbines, producing a total of 1,539.2 MW in net contracted power capacity. In water production, the company operates a Multiple Effect Distillation (MED) unit capable of producing 107 million imperial gallons per day (MIGD) of desalinated water. The Az-Zour North One Power and Water Plant offers several environmental benefits: Efficiency and reduced emissions, desalination with minimal environmental impact, water conservation, compliance with environmental regulations. In summary, the Az-Zour North One Power and Water Plant combines efficient power generation with sustainable water production, making it an environmentally responsible asset for Kuwait.
